For the first time in history, half of humanity lives in cities. By 2030 nearly 60 per cent of the world’s people will be urban dwellers.

Urban growth is most rapid in the developing world, where cities gain an average of 5 million residents every month.

One Billion Slum Dwellers

Today, nearly 1 Billion People live in Slums. Slums are characterized by one or more of the following characteristics: lack of water, lack of sanitation, overcrowding, non-durable structures and insecure tenure.

The Places We Live Exhibit Comes to DC PDF Print E-mail


tpwlIn late summer 2005, Magnum photographer Jonas Bendiksen moved into a small room in the middle of Kibera, Nairobi, to try to understand how daily life is lived in one of Africa’s largest slums. He was immediately struck by the residents’ awesome capacity to create normalcy and dignity out of extremely challenging living conditions.

His stay in Nairobi sparked a three-year project documenting households and families in Caracas, Mumbai, and Jakarta. Bendiksen attempted to challenge some of his own assumptions about urban poverty.

Obama Administration to Host World Habitat Day 2009 PDF Print E-mail


whd2009The Obama Administration will co-host with UN-HABITAT the global celebrations of World Habitat Day in Washington, D.C. on 5 October 2009.

Cabinet Secretary Shaun Donovan, who heads the US Department for Housing and Urban Development, confirmed the decision saying he welcomed the event as an opportunity to foster collaboration between the two agencies.

A group of 15 policy institutes, NGOs, and foundations will join the Department for Housing and Urban Development and UN-HABITAT in organizing a number of high-level events on the occasion of WHD 2009.
